California Science Project at Irvine
Open Summer Institute 2007
SCIENCE FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS
August 6 - 17, 2007
- Two-week long, full day courses are available for graduate level university extension credit in science (six quarter units). You may take just one week; we recommend that you take the two weeks.
- Courses will focus on an in-depth study of standards-based physical science, earth science or life science topics that are hardest to teach and hardest for students to learn, and that will support you as you prepare your students for the 8th and 9th through12th grade science tests.
- Specific Topics will be selected, when possible, to recognize participant’s prior experience and current needs.
- The “Physical Science Institute” will include topics chosen to strengthen the academic content knowledge and pedagogical skills of teachers in areas of chemistry and physics in the 8-12th grade standards. This course is taught in collaboration with UCI Departments of Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy.
- The 6th and 9th grade “Earth Science Institute” will include topics chosen to strengthen the academic content knowledge and pedagogical skills of teachers with a focus on the Earth Science standards at the middle and high school levels. This course is taught in collaboration with UCI Departments of Earth Systems Science and Physics and Astronomy.
- The “Life Science Institute” will include topics in biology spanning 7th - 12th grade science standards. It will be built around testing blueprints, with a particular emphasis placed upon genetics and physiology standards, as a result of the weighting of these standard sets on the tests. In addition, particular care will be paid to those standards that are both the hardest to teach, and the hardest for students to learn.
COSTS
$450 per teacher per week (includes materials, subsistence, parking etc.) Check with your district/school on whether or not they will pay for you.
Scholarships to cover the weekly costs are available on application, (via email to amiller@uci.edu) especially for teachers from schools with exceptional needs.
